When you are designing brochure printing materials that you will use, it is important to know how you can manipulate text in the lay out. For starters, you should know these terms first: Font family – font family is the term used to refer to the name of the font that you use. Some examples of font family are Arial, Garamond, Myriad Pro, Joker, Bodoni, and the like.

Font style

Font style is the way your type looks like. Some of the more common font styles are – Regular, Bold, Light and Condensed. The font style is usually indicated after the font family as in the case of Arial which has Arial Black, Arial Narrow, Arial Condensed, etc.

Leading

Leading refers to the vertical spaces between types. The bigger the leading means the spaces in between line are bigger and vice versa.

Kerning

Kerning on the other hand refers to the space between the characters that you use. The bigger you leading is, he farther away two character will be from each other.

Tracking

Not to be confused with kerning, tracking refers to the character spacing across a selected field. A whole selection should be considered and not just between two characters.

Horizontal scale and Vertical scale

These two terms refer to the character width and height respectively.
